All you need to know about flat-lays

What is a flat-lay?

Flat-lay photography is rising to be a large part of wedding photography. Its popularity has grown in recent years, as we become a more minimalistic society and don’t necessarily want to keep all the things from our wedding. More and more couples are donating or selling their veil, shoes, and other accessories, as well as their dresses and suits. That makes it all the more important to photograph these precious items that come together make the day extra special. Photography has always been about preserving memories, and especially with digital photography, you will never lose them as you can make so many copies and save the photos in multiple places. So no worries about losing your photos, even if you do get rid of the items! Okay, I got a little sidetracked (but clearly I am in the right business because I get so passionate about the importance of photography!

What do I need to photograph a flat lay?

Firstly, you will need to assign someone, usually the Maid Of Honour, to gather all the things you want in your flat lays.

THE CHECK LIST:

this is just a guideline, feel free to leave or add things

Most important pieces:

Make sure to photograph these three together, before adding other items!

  • Invitations and Save the Date — here you want two copies of each so you can photograph the front and back simultaneously. Make sure to include the envelopes if they were also designed specially.

  • Rings and ring boxes — you want to have both wedding rings in your flat lays.

  • Engagement ring — include the engagement ring too, and if you have a pretty box, use that.

  • Loose flowers (this can be organised with the florist before the day, that they give you some extra flowers).

Bride Flat Lays:

  • jewellery (necklace, earrings etc.)

  • veil

  • bouquet

  • perfume

  • garter

  • wedding shoes

  • the “something blue”

  • wedding rings and engagement ring (don’t forget to take some photos with only the engagement ring in the shot, too)

Groom flat lays:

  • cufflinks

  • shoes

  • tie

  • perfume

  • boutonniere

  • watch

  • dress socks

  • wedding rings

  • whiskey / cigars, etc

Extras to bring to elevate the flat lay:

As the photographer, coming prepared with these things will make a big difference. Don’t be afraid, however to work with what you’ve got and grow your collection over time!

  • ring boxes (it’s worth starting a collection. you can buy really nice ones on Etsy, and you’ll have them for every wedding)

  • ribbons

  • dishes or small mirrors to lay rings or jewellery on

  • stamps and other small trinkets (you can also buy flat-lay styling kits on Etsy)

  • a mat or fabric to lay everything on top- this will help you if there’s no pretty table or floor in your location

When and how do I photograph flat lays?

Flat lays are best photographed at the start of the day, while the bride is doing her makeup and while the guys are starting to get ready, before you take their “getting ready” photos, where they’re mostly dressed.

Make sure everything is laid out on the floor or on a low table, near natural light. It’s best to be right by a window for this. Use a reflector to bounce some of the light onto your subject, if needed, and try to avoid any direct flash (unless that is the look you’re going for).

Don’t be overwhelmed!

The first time I saw a list like this, I was so overwhelmed. Then when I shot my first flat lay, I realised how much intricate detail and care goes into these photos. But they are worth every single second of work we put into them. If you dont have all the pretty extras yet, don’t worry. Build a collection slowly, and over time you will have an amazing set of cute little accessories to make your flat lays extra special. Most importantly, be creative and use what you’ve got around you!
